Little Surprise Visitor

Post by Killerbunny » Sun Jan 23, 2022 5:00 pm

Thought we were going crazy last couple of days because something seemed to be in the kestrel nest box. It wasn't a kestrel but an Eastern Screech Owl! The hole is 4" X 3" for reference. Very exciting. Seems unafraid.

Insects and rodents mostly. They are very small birds about 8". Your girls are all in by dusk!

That is so cool, hope they have babies there, did it "hoot" or possibly "screech "?

Definitely a weird noise. We hear them all summer at night and wondered what it was. Now we know.

Well, doesn't that beat all, never heard that one, ever.
sounds a bit like horse neighing , I would remember that.
The one I hear very often is I think a Barn owl, which sounds a bit like a dog bark.

How exciting to have one in your kesterel box! My dogs thought the calls were very interesting :).

People sometimes get Screech Owls in their open mailboxes here in the south. Can you imagine reaching in for a flyer and getting a peck on the hand?
