I can't figure this one out.
Think it's a juvenile something. Large hawk came down at the sparrows at dusk yesterday hence the picture. Distinctive heavily blotched back. Couldn't see the underside. ANyway it's welcome to as many sparrows and starlings as it likes! ALmost thinking juvenile goshawk with that heavy tail barring?

Were you able to see what colour the legs were? Was the breast a lighter colour, or did you get a ook? Maybe Coopers or Sharp Shin?

No it all happened so fast. It was quite large. COuldn't see the underside at all.

It's a "sparrow Hawk" local custom tells me , if it hunts chickens it's a chicken Hawk, if it hunts pigeons it's a pigeon Hawk, etc.....
...but seriously, the blotched back, as you say would indicate juvenile something, seems a bit late for juvenile anything, but at this point who knows.

The storms with hight winds from the South have blown some birds off their usual migration routs, so could be anything ?

That's a coopers hawk with that barring on the tail.

We get lots of hawks through here on migration although the Goshawks stick around.

I think it looks like a Sharp Shinned hawk. I get them here sometimes.
