Seramas

Post by Shnookie » Tue Jun 08, 2021 12:07 pm

I bought some cuteness yesterday - a Serama hen and her 3 one month old chicks. It looks like 1 boy and 2 girl chicks. :) I've never had a broody hen. I like to listen to them talking to each other.

I took the hen away from the chicks a couple of days ago. She seems happy about it, the chicks complained a bit at bedtime for a couple days. The rooster has tried to crow twice. They sure mature fast. The hen is quite tame, but the chicks are a bit flighty. Here are some recent pictures of the chicks.

How do you know when to remove the mom? What would happen if you did not remove the mom?

When our Silkie hen, Gracie, raised chicks, I never removed her. She decided when it was time to cut the apron strings. They all grew up as part of the flock from day one. Gracie took care of them until she determined that they were old enough to take care of themselves. Usually she kept them with her for about 6 weeks. Some hens will send them off sooner.

Are the chicks too young to be with the flock at 6 weeks? Will they get injured by the larger chickens?
