Post by Shnookie » Mon Mar 23, 2020 6:03 pm

It's sunny and warm today so I took some new pictures of my large chickens. Here are some of them.

Did you notice they are all living harmoniously in one big group? NOT. They are in 6 pens, partly because of personality conflicts (theirs).

Ha! Ha! Yes I sometimes have the same problem, I have one rooster who doesn't like buff coloured hens and will go after them to chase them away. Currently he is in with a hen and chicks she has one buff chick that he chases but he is becoming more used to the colour and less aggressive and the poor little chick knows to keep away from him.

Lol Snookie mine are divided too. It's mostly because of the roosters but I have a few little hens that think they are big bird and will take on anybody! I love the chicken in your second pic on this post. What is she?

She's a Speckled Basque. She's the only one I have left and I have never gotten any chicks from her. She is 6 years old now. She gets a bit whiter every year. Her name is Speckie.

Lovely!
6 pens? Nice!
I have 3 - two are outside, side-by-side with a partition door and one in the barn with a chicken door to one of the outside pens.

Yes, the gray one in the first picture is a Splash Ameraucana hen. She is 5. The other one is a Basque hen who is 4. Both of them get picked until they have wounds when I put them with any other hens. They have been together since last year.
The second picture is Speckie. The third picture is Yellow, a Basque hen. She's Speckie's pen mate. She is 7 this year.
The four in the last picture are Basque hens. 3 are 4 years old and one is 2 years old. One of the older ones is really bossy and chases the rest out of the nest box when they are trying to lay eggs. I gave them a bigger nest box to see if it helps.
