The last 2 times I made yogurt I bought pure filtered milk (lactantia) and skipped the heating all together. Just pour the milk into the instant pot, mix in a couple tablespoons of starter, I like a bit of vanilla. Then place a loose fitting lid on and hit the yogurt button. In 8 hours you have yogurt.
That would also solve the issue with the ring because you don't use the lid.
