Oh no @WLLady these youngsters are a nightmare! Will have a careful look when we go out in the canoe next. Just wondering if it's too early for young RWBBs?

It is a young redwing blackbird. Male I think. I just didn't remember it, and it is too soon for young from this year to be out here. I wonder if it was a late chick last year and didn't change color yet for some reason.

Here are some pictures from the Audubon website.

My sister just had cardinal chicks outside her window was just going over to see them but a bluejay got them all, 4 little chicks. Cardinal parents were pretty upset chasing that bluejay all over but too late now. I wonder if the cardinals will start another batch.

It's a strange year here. I have virtually no predators and tons of rodents. Less birds came through on migration, and a lot less are nesting here than usual. We had temperatures near 30 for a while, then frost a couple nights, and now it is cool enough at night for the furnace to come on. I do have a fair number of bumblebees and ladybugs, and a large group of painted lady butterflies were here last week.
