Sheep on the move...
On my way to the barn I was stopped so they could move this 600+ flock from South Bay to near Milford....

Nice, I had no idea there were large flocks like this around. Are they for milk or meat? I keep toying with the idea of a couple.

This is a meat flock that has been in the south end of the County for the last 30 years or so. They are very close to @WaupoosCowgirl but their kids just bought a farm close to Milford.
They use a NZ grazing model (low input) for their flock and with many farms here now owned by non farmers they have been able to move them around this part of the County using portable electric fencing, water trailers and Guardian dogs. During the winter they have them on a large field and roll large bales out for them. They also have land on waupoos island and transfer some of the flock over there by barge.
The flock size has varied, they had to sell off a good number of them a year ago after the hay crop was really poor and they didn’t have enough hay over the winter. They often have several groups rotating through different fields at any one time depending on how much pasture is available. Most people love to see them on the move even if they may have to wait as they pass by...

Some of those sheep are used at the Sheep Dog trials in Kingston, with the size of the flock they are able to rotate the sheep so they don't run the same sheep all the time and stress them too much.

Yes, they take them every year...I’ll have to go sometime!
We took our 4H sheep club to their farm several years ago and Erin gave us a demo of how the dogs work with the sheep and it’s amazing to watch them. They also have a bred of NZ dog call a Huntaway which is also used but only for driving large flocks not with the finesse of the border collies, especially on the large hills they have in NZ.

The trials are interesting. It's a nice day out I often wondered where they got the sheep from.
