am canoeing
We were out this am at one of our favourite spots where few others go. Stopped for coffee and this little guy trotted out of the reeds and spent a couple of minutes with us. I have never seen a virginia rail before. This is the same area where the deer and 2 fawns swam across.

Re: am canoeing
Went to the same spot this am. Saw both of the pair and, happy news, 2 fledged youngsters. Only saw the kids because we heard that "feed me now" noise. Clearly the parents are now encouraging them to find their own food too and they flew a short distance between reed beds. Likely they won't be there next week.

Re: am canoeing
OK some more pics from this week same spot.
Funny thing is this is an area very close to a highly boat trafficked spot just not quite as easy to get to. A few cottages and you sometimes see a small boat. The wildlife is very unafraid. This is one of the youngsters butt view only. You can see it is much darker than parents.

Re: am canoeing
More canoeing this week and a few more pics. Saw a couple of previous acquaintances, this "baby" was in the photo contest as hitching a ride. Funnily it was still trying to get a ride and being told firmly - NO! Also a common gallinule. Wondered about these baby ducks, seems very late for this young perhaps she lost her first brood. Picture fuzzy but you get the idea.
