And now for MY "breeding" pen!

Warning - one of these things is not like the others.

At least I can now tell Cheryls eggs apart. I am calling it the breeders pen but I am getting zippo fertility ATM. I'm hoping his ex acts like a teaser. He appears to be breeding them now at least.

What is with the Wyandotte boys not even wanting to mate? They make me think of old fat guys sitting in front of a t.v. all day, drinking beer and eating potato chips.
Maybe they need to have "the TALK"?

They look great!!!
I would like to say I have no more insight in to Wyandotte males approach to mating, but I must say they are gentlemen all the way and prefer a bit of romance before they jump to it ;) or at least that's what I would like to believe, but they are loyal to a fault, and it may be a bit of a fault.
I kept Mactawish separate and out of sight of Columbians all winter, coz I knew I wanted to breed him to Blues and he isn't shy about showing his complete preference for Columbians.
He has been with the Blues for a while, I let them out today on the other side of the barn from the Columbians so he couldn't spot them, while sitting there watching them I see him abandon the Blue hens and ever so inconspicuously making his way around the barn, had to run to head him off and he was non too happy about it.
I must assume he can tell them by their voices or remembers where they live from last year. men.

roflmbo
I have an EE rooster I got from @TomK . He's very... vigorous...but ONLY with black hens. One copy of mottled is ok, but he definitely treats those hens differently than solid blacks. Mottled, laced, partridge, Columbian, paint, splash, blue? Completely ignored. He won't even roost next to them. :gaah:

The other one is less dominant, and stays in the barn, very rarely venturing out to range with #1 (I haven't named them...yet...) BUT, so do the larger bulk of the hens! He has his pick of about 20, and he's not nearly so picky! I am very shortly going to do a fertility test for #2, but I suspect it's near 100 percent. The larger black Orp crosses hang out with #1 all day, and #2 picks up the slack.
Both roosters came through the winter with flying colours.

So I did another fertility check (scrambled eggs for lunch). OC had joked it would be easy to tell Cheryls eggs from the wyandottes because they'd be fertile. Well she was right. Cheryls are the only fertile eggs in there so far. Methinks it's time for a bikini wax.
