New arrivals

Post by Giffen Farms » Sat Mar 17, 2018 7:45 pm

Went for a drive today for an offer I couldn't pass up on a quad of Salmon favorelles from a retiring long time breeder Terry Gerow in Brighton, very nice guy, they're selling and moving into town and has made the tough decision to sell off his entire show flock, has been raising 3 separate bloodlines all from across the states.

Then Went to the Beaverton area and picked up some silver laced and blue laced red wyandotte chicks from day olds up to 1 week

Sad to see the long time breeders leaving, but I guess that time comes for all of us eventually, glad you are able to continue with good quality stock.

Love these birds! They are such fun. Are you planning on selling some of the eggs?

yep: a farmer builds a life's work of breeding something special (or worse, recreating or rejuvenating a breed) and then they retire and no one is there to take the torch and keep it going.

I only seen Favorelles there, 3 desperate barns/sheds, the show circuit barn, juveniles/immature barn and the rooster barn,

This year I'll hatch out some chicks no eggs though and next year was planning on continuing his dream of of entering into them into the show ring, birds are very docile and Heavy! like Cochin brahma heavy. He had said that birds are "local fair" ready in the first year but for the "big" shows they're ready in the second year after they've matured and filled out, lots to learn from him and if I had more time to pick his brain- I will definitely be keeping his # and in touch.
