Have you considered building a "free standing cage?
1"x1" welded wire would protect the birds and when you move, you would be able to take this with you and would have a safe place to keep the birds until settled.

:iagree: Kind of like a chicken-sized version of what hubby built for the quails. If/when we move it will be easy peasy to move the quail with us. I understand why your husband doesn't want to make any upgrades to your existing coop, but a portable/tractor coop would be transportable to wherever you move and would keep your chickens safe from predators.

GROSS.....CREEPY.....YUCK!!!!
Yesterday morning I woke up to a new present left by one of the cats.
A BIG GIANT Gargantuan RAT, deader than a door knob, laying in the hallway
Did I say BIG?

Guess that answers my question!
Yesterday I poured Used kitty litter down the tunnel,
followed by 1/2 a bottle of ammonia & 1/2" gravel packed down.
Stayed up last nite reading up on the "Norway rat"
known for it's luv of bird feed, mice, water & protected underground tunnels.

THIS morning, the rats had dug it up again.
Didn't phase them at all....just a mere inconvenience

So I am on a mission to make their life miserable.
Laid snap trap on the ground with hunks of hot dog....but did not actually set the trap
The sites said to let the rats get used to seeing the traps for a few days before setting.

will post if I'm successful - damn RATS!!!!

Last time I had rats I left lights on in barn , they don't like light , put poison down hole for food with peanut butter on it & filled in holes . Didn't take long . Luck

I found a few holes, & put 1 down the biggest tunnel.
Then a slender rock to cover the hole.
NEVER thought of Peanut butter!!!! Brilliant Ross!
There are a few more holes I found, will use peanut butter on those.

"So Far" I don't see evidence of the rats Inside the coop.
Only in the adjoining outside meshed rooms.

I stopped using poison 4 months ago when one of my Favorite birds died.
FINGERS CROSSED, thanx again Ross.

I have had success with the large snap traps against rats in the past. Set 3 or 4 of them for extra Good Luck!

IS it even POSSIBLE the rats are GONE?

I baited traps (but did not set them) for 4 days.
Then I baited & set them, but NO rats caught.
The food was GONE from all 5 traps for the next week.
( followed the videos on how to properly bait them )

I also put Poison bait cubes covered in peanut butter down 4 tunnels I found.
It has been over a week & there has been NO evidence of any rat digging in the outside pen.
Can it be POSSIBLE they are Gone?

I'm dancing the Happy dance, just in case

Aye, we had a rat in the house (only one), and it was eating potatoes. We'd find a peeled half potato. I set up traps and a month later I nailed it. It got clobbered on the head and got out of the trap and left a trail of blood under the door into my parents kitchen. We followed the trail....and it was standing by the wood stove...wheezing from blood loss. Carla screamed and I clubbed it with a small shovel. It was the size of a big squirrel or a small groundhog. How it got under the door I don't know...but it was big. And that's the first and last rat.

LUV the description....I felt a shudder when I read "standing & wheezing" :hide:

Just thought after reading there could be a "Colony" I was expecting I would be killing MANY before they were gone.
Now my efforts will go towards killing the damn mice before winter!
