A new member was talking about getting some chickens, I thought posting pictures of our breeds with a little info about them might help a newbie choosing a breed that he can get info from members on and possible obtain from members .
Below are exchequer leghorns, colourful ,excellent layers of white eggs. Lay well up to 8 years
Cons
Males have huge combs that have to be protected from frost bite, a flighty breed.

Good idea Kenya! I still consider myself a newbie and will really enjoy gaining this knowledge.
I have limited experience with different breeds.
Here's what I have and a little info on each breed: Old English Game Bantam (OEGB) - high strung but easily tamed if raised from chicks. Great foragers and flyers (need a roofed pen to keep them in) Decent layers from April-September (3-5 eggs per week) VERY broody
Do ok in cold but need to watch for frostbite in rooster
Large Fowl Cochin - very calm and docile, love interaction with people. Slow to mature. Mine free range but they are not restless when penned. Not a top egg producer (mine aren't laying yet so can't really comment)

Barred Rock (mine are hatchery stock which differ quite a bit from breeder line) Sassy birds but very tame. Excellent free rangers. 5-6 large eggs per week even at 4 1/2 years old. Dominant birds.

Ameraucanas, dual purpose breed, lay blue eggs, very good on free range, outgoing breed that can be made in to pets, cockerels in some strains show different levels of aggression, invaluable on free range as they will protect "his" hens against all comers.
Pea comb and almost no wattles makes them an ideal breed for cold climate. Wyandottes, heritage dual purpose breed, very good on free range, independent hard working beautiful birds,
excellent temperament, decent layers of medium size tinted eggs, and come in many stunning color varieties.
like all rose comb breeds have some low fertility issues
