What predator did this?

Post by Satellite » Fri Oct 14, 2016 6:46 pm

Found this poor girl in the pen today. Neighbour thinks weasel....any ideas? This happened during the day and only on the head. No over the top aggression ever shown by the girls so I don't think it is them.

When checking her out, I also saw this mass. Egg sized. She was always skittish so I didn't pick her up alot to havd noticed it beforehand. Just a general mass?

A weasel will tear the heads off. Looks like weasel to me.

That is helpful ross! Thanks.

The head was still there.

My husband wondered if the mass on her killed her and the other chickens pecked her.

I guess I will know it it occurs again. To my understanding, only quarter inch wire will keep them out?

That mass just looks like a fatty deposit. Some birds get them...particularly around the vent...doubt that would be lethal...
