PoultryPrincess...we just picked up a 'stripper' from Frances this weekend. We have named him Channing for obvious reasons. We thought it was HILARIOUS, until we had to explain it to my daughter

He almost makes me like the way NN birds look. Definite personality! By the way, how can you tell it's a cockerel? Looks girly to me lol

I was "hoping" for a pullet, but this little guy was kicking, screaming & causing drama the entire time I held him....in a BIG way.
He was hatched July 7th, so he's like 1 1/2 months old?
No way a female would carry on like that for so long.
( I read that if you hold a chick for a few minutes, if it's a female she will be subdued when she can't escape....but a male will kick & scream the whole time ) (( windwalkingwolf...he could be a "girly man" LOL ))

Well, I don't know about silkies, but with my Giants, the opposite is true! I can usually tell boys from girls at around 5-8 weeks old by comb and wattles, but if I have a late bloomer or unsure or impatient, I pick him/her up. The boys struggle but then settle, and the girls carry on and shreik forever. Even as well-handled adults, the girls will let me pet and squeeze, but if I lift one she yells and struggles like the Mother of all Hawks has descended upon her, while a rooster will struggle and kick and complain, but then settle. Maybe it's breed dependant?
