Breakfast is being served...

Post by Ontario Chick » Thu Aug 11, 2016 10:24 pm

Our chickens get served breakfast of fruit and veg all winter.
I look forward to May when I expect everybody to get their own freaking breakfast until October November and last year even December.
This is a first year I can remember when by end of July the grass was burnt to a crisp and I am back to serving breakfast on a bed of last years straw.
I hope they appreciate it ;)
For Ameraucanas I have rigged up a giant dish out of landscape edging...

If I die and get reincarnated: may I be one of my pugs or one of your chickens!

What a lovely compliment Bert,
but you know everybody here is expected to earn their keep, your pugs probably have much more relaxed lifestyle. ;)

Talking about pampered poultry! Love that you take such great care of them!! If I'm ever your way in the winter months don't be surprised if I show for breakfast :)

There's precious little for the girls to range on here these weeks...everything is so parched...grass has been done for weeks...last year i fed the extra from my garden...especially kale and zucchini...so this year i grew a lot more and good thing too...decided to grow a row of green cabbage too...they all split in the heat so salvaged what i could for my saurkraut and the rest is chicken salad...the girls are eating well...but no grass..nope..none

How right you are!
Reading the comments I had to chuckle, there is some basic misunderstanding here, I don't pamper them, I just can't stand the moaning and groaning and complaining, when there is nothing interesting to peck at :)
Same here Tom the grass has now turned sickly grey and on top of it the willows are loosing leaves, so no shade, wish I had grown more veggies like you.
Now starting to wonder what the cost of feed is going to be looking at the stunted corn.
Now wood be a good time to make some haylage, if only there was grass....

OC...adopt me? please?

yeah feed prices, especially corn, going to go up....lots of people doing silage this year instead of seed/feed corn. i have corn on right now, hoping we'll get something and then after harvest i'll glean the field and strip the cobs and crack it for the girls/horses for the winter. tons of corn fields around here and if they aren't silage chopped i know i can glean at least 400 acres around here....pretty easy with the atv. saves a bit of money.

Kathy, my sons are 37 & 42 & 49 , if as I suspect you will fit neatly somewhere in there, you have got a deal :)
I always said I wanted a daughter only if she came fully finished at the age of 21 possibly because my mother and I disagreed on the way I should be raised since I knew SHE was doing it all wrong. :)
