Time for the Wyandotte chicks to have their first adventure, unfortunately instead of lush grass, there is a pitiful showing of clover, which they will finish in a week, need rain!!!!
The first step is always scariest.. getting a bit braver now pathetic grass Mactavish checking out the new chicks

Love having them outside, just wish there was an actual grass growing in the run.
There are 4 two month old chicks and the rest are 3 weeks younger.
Interestingly, it was the younger chicks that went out first, it took the older ones two days to venture out.

The last few days have been a melding of the small group hatched in/around may07 and the larger group hatched June 14....aside from some initial bullying it all seems to have settled out just fine...the older girls, however, are a totally different matter..lol....this will take some time...

I am happy with the way these two groups integrated, that's why I was interested in Jim's Wyandottes, they were the right age and would have still worked together in one flock.
Once they get older its a hassle, I put pullets in with the main flock at 5 month and 3 years later they still remember who are their hatch mates, don't know how they can tell, if they didn't have bands I couldn't tell them apart.

I'm sure they will eat the clover with just as much relish as grass! Pigweed, cleavers, mustard and lambs quarters on the other hand...not over here. Which is too bad, because it seems to be all that's growing right now! I agree, we need rain.

Unfortunately the clover is about 8 weeks old, none of the last years stuff came up, and that will be done in about a week.
Lambs quarters are stripped with relish, just shows how bad it is, and if I had any doubt that it's too hot and dry,
found an earwig in the fridge this morning....................

Only green grass we got left is under our Walnut trees & over septic . Chickens dont seem to have any problem munching on it . Luck
