Poultry Talk Ontario (pto.ca)

Well over the past week or so I have added some new additions to my flock. I have also re-homed some birds and have a few more to re-home.

For the past couple months I have been working on a new breed project with the assistance of Red Ninja and Chicken Ninja..... Swedish Black Hens (Svart Hona) we attempted to hatch some eggs shipped from Newfoundland with minimal success unfortunately. In the end for now I ended up with 1 Svart Hona that hatched at Red Ninja's place, those at the PTO picnic got to see the little black beauty when the Ninjas delivered it to the picnic for me. I also piggybacked on someones chick order from Newfoundland last week and got 1 more Svart Hona, giving me 2 chicks total for now. I will look to add a few more at a later date.

Along with the 1 Svart Hona I got shipped, I also picked up 1 black and 2 grey isbar chicks, hoping for a couple hens for green eggs, no plans to breed isbars.
Yesterday was my big chicken road trip. I left my place at around 730 am and headed to see Bart Nagel, at Bulbs of Fire, near Penetanguishene. I had a quick visit with Bart he was just finishing harvesting his garlic. I picked up 5 young Bielefelders (2 cockerals and 3 pullets). That gives me 5 cockerals and 6 pullets from 3 different people to put together breeding group for next year.
I also picked up a dozen black Copper Marans hatching eggs and 6 Malines hatching eggs to make the trip worth while. I need a new BC Marans Rooster for next year.

After leaving Bart's I headed for Pearson Airport to pick up my shipment of chicks coming from Winnipeg. I got my chicks, all 8 looked good and gave them some water with Stress Aid and some more food and after they had a little drink we were off heading home. I stopped about every hour and gave the birds a drink and a bit of food and we made it home all safe and sound around 11 pm...

1100 km and about 15 hour round trip + all birds doing well so far = successful day.

Oh ya the 8 chicks I got from Winnipeg were Cornish Cross meat chicks, I heard they have really good tasting chicken in Winnipeg!!!

Just kidding the chicks from Winnipeg are Ayam Cemani, Indonesian Black Chickens. Very excited!!!

Thanks everyone, I am very excited to see them as they grow, they are kind of at that akward, goofy looking stage.

I am also very interested to see the differences between the Ayams and the Svart Honas as they grow.

For sure baron I definitely was not paying near that much. I bought them off on-line auction and paid less for my chicks then someone bought Ayam hatching eggs for off the auction the week before. The Svart Hona actually ended up costing more then the Ayam.
