(Likely US dollars, but even for backyard flock keepers, getting anyone to pay a reasonable dime is a challenge)

A customer of mine yesterday picked up her 'last' dozen as she found someone else local who is selling eggs $2/doz. I thanked her for her business to date and welcomed her back at any time. She'll be back.

Why Is This?

I have had discussion with my Mom routinely. She believes that farm gate should be cheaper than stores because there is no cost for a middleman. she thinks I'm crazy because when I do buy milk I pay $10 per gallon right from the farm. I have explained that at times raising my own cost more then buying from the stores. She also complains about the cost of all of her medications. Since I have started pointing out the fact that I don't spend any money on meds so I can justify $10 a gallon for milk. Guess who's 67 yr old Mommy is growing a garden and has 6 of my Barred rock girls in her backyard :)

I'm one of those people who will sell a dozen eggs for $2. I have more eggs than I can deal with myself, and it's more convenient for them to pick up eggs at the grocery store than to get them from me. I figure I need to give them a reason to buy from me!

Lynners, you are not selling a commodity, you are selling a value added good. It is worth more than the store product and should be priced accordingly. Better to GIVE some eggs away as a promotion and sell the rest at $4 or $5.

I recommend you sell a few chickens and raise your price. You make it tougher for the rest of us. The eggs you sell are not Fords, they are BMW's and should be priced accordingly.

A local ski hill (Mount Pakenham) had a ski school that was over-full on weekends, so the next year that raised their prices hoping to reduce demand. Instead, demand (attendance) went up as folks think its worth more. The ski hill is not big or fancy but is convenient for the "wealthy" suburb of Kanata near Ottawa.

But it is your choice. Have a good weekend (and please voice your opinion: we want to hear it.)

We were just discussing this morning about putting our prices up. With feed and hydro costs up we have to.
We are letting our customers know that as of Aug 1 the price will be $5.
We too have had times when I thought what am I going to do with the extra 10-12 doz, then miraculously I'll get someone wanting that many.

All our business is local word of mouth. The hens produce a nice color assortment that our customers love. They also tell us that our egg yolks are beautiful and that the egg "tastes like an egg".
