Last year we had a very lazy bachelor beaver who didn't get any more ambitious then 4" poplars.
The willow was just a branch from neighbors tree stuck in the ground, just to see if it would survive, managed to live thru several generations of beavers, mainly because it had a large 1"x1" strip of wire wrapped around the base.
Last year "somebody" needed a pice of just such a wire, and "somebody else" remembered the willow and assumed the tree was too big for the beaver to bother with.
Apparently our bachelor has got himself a wife and either she is doing the grunt work or has put the old boy to work.

That's what I thought, when I told DH the beaver has started on the willow, he was going to put the wire back....I thought that was pretty funny, because it was half gone by then. :)

Poor tree! Yes those beavers are amazing. No worries, the willow will grow back- somewhat shrubbier but you'll be amazed at how much it will grow. I've had some Japanese varieties and hybrids grow 10' in one season.

Wow...that was some chewing!
Could you retrieve that wire mesh & put it back on?
It looks really bad, but the willow likely will shoot out from that wound.

I had a "Pussy Willow" branch that I rooted & then planted @ our cottage.
It grew into a beautiful tree & we luved the fuzzy pussy buds every spring.
One day we get there....& it is totally destroyed.
We looked across the lake to the island & all the soft trees were down.
Like someone had clear cut - eeeek!
