I see lots of people and their dogs. It bothers me that many folks want dogs as an "accessory" or the "cool factor" as the dogs are badly behaved and badly treated. Badly treated: where dog owners are not aware of their dog's needs; be it exercise or intellectual stimulation or social development. Or where they are trainable but the owners aren't smart enough to train a dog (or are enforcing bad behaviours by mistake or are just plain lazy). I think of what children would be like if left alone for hours at a time and uneducated and not taught manners: yet this often happens with dogs.
Then I see dogs that are very hard to train and wonder what in their history brought them to this point. Most of my books are about training hunting dogs (another romantic idea after growing grapes) and the author of one points out that week 6 and 7 of a pups life are important for psychological development; especially for self confidence.
Nothing implied: just passing along a few things absorbed on my path so far.
I am not a master; just a student.

Thanks KB.
I've had GSD's almost my entire life. I'm very well aware of what I'm in for and there is a reason why reputable breeders back me owning GSD's. And when places that have GSD bans, we challenge and my dogs change minds.
I've got it covered.

What's fresh in my mind: i saw a client yesterday. They have a friendly GSD with bad manners. And a newly acquired pup pit bull x something. The pup was bouncing off the walls and off me (didn't bring a jockstrap). The daughter is now 17 and her mother died of an asthma attack ten years ago. They were in the car on the way to the hospital when she died. The mother's portrait hangs on the wall in the living room. The mother has an identical twin sister. Then her dad and step-mom just split in an ugly divorce. He has lingering health problems from a car accident. I've spent a lot of time with them the last few years: lots of hurt that hasn't healed (if it ever will) in that house. And that is only half the story. Pets do a lot to help healing, but i doubt the dogs will be trained to any degree.
So pardon if my writings are misplaced.

Sounds like our neighbour who wanted a nice little lap dog. She has back problems so not that mobile. Got a ...... Jack Russell. Yup. The poor dog went through it's life being nagged, much like the husband. Probably though NO was it's name. No thought to the amount of exercise required. Very nice personality but stifled. Husband is now sick and dog has been euthanised because wife can't cope (dog had allergies too so not just that). Very sad when a nice dog is ruined. all she wanted to do was run, hunt and sniff.

Oh yes and at one point she got in a local "dog whisperer" to "fix" the dog. didn't go well when she was told there needed to be owner participation and understanding.

German shepherds are a very smart dog
It's a natural for them
They are very easy to train if you are willing to take the time and effort involved
You will be repaid tenfold for your efforts
Only dog I've had until I was in my late 30's
They all trained me a thing or two also. Lol
Then I got a border collie!!!! Omg. Energy at its finest!!!
Great dog. And I do credit that to my then older shepherd that trained the dog. Incredibly even calmed it down
People could not believe how my border collie was so calm!!!
If I said no to the pup and it didn't listen. Then shepherd would go grab it my scruff of neck and sorta hold onto it until it chilled. Amazing ing!!!
I could go on and on about this
Sooo. Lucky for all of you I'm gonna quit now
