This made me think of my old partner Larry...good guy, nice enough, but once he had something it was his for life...trouble was, he loved auction sales and would come home with all kinds of crap...he'd bid on boxes of stuff sight unseen...one time ended up with a box of broken ceiling tiles...not a one was undamaged...lol...his wife died a few years before him and he remarried and when he passed on his widow had to deal with all that junk...there was some decent stuff mixed in but he wouldn't ever consider selling anything...most of his belongings he had no use for, it got brought home, stashed and sorta forgotten...i once came across a biscuit jointer in his garage, damn near perfect condition and asked him about it...said he'd picked it up at a sale cheap, couldn't resist...he'd never used it so I, being the woodworker type, offered to buy it from him..."nah!, got a few projects in mind so will be needing it" was his reply...as far as i know it ended up in the dumpster after the funeral...he wasn't alone in that train of thought...once it was his, it was his

I believe we call that hoarding.

Lou has hoarding tendencies. I don't allow it here so he has a second level at the shop that he has some stuff. Dan, Josh, Mike and myself went through it a few years ago and it took us 3 days of solid work but we got it down to a fraction of the items. Like can fill a pick up. From an 18' wheeler. Lou had a leather coat from his 16th birthday. Now a young man from the food bank has it. It's been 4 years and Lou still hasn't noticed. He hasn't even noticed we cleaned it out up top of the shop. That's just absolute non-sense!

I, on the other hand, am the complete opposite. Material items do not carry sentimental value and if I don't use it, it gets donated and I don't even think twice.

Me, stuff comes and goes. I take a long handle garden tool to the dump: the best stuff is in the metal bin. I won't have to buy chicken or cage wire for years if ever. since we got married in 1996 we've taken two truckloads of junk away from here per year. the only thing that was missed was a ringer washer (don't catch yer fingers). i took it out of the shed and put it on the lawn and I told my mom she had a month to find a place to put it. a month went buy, away it went. a year later my mom asked what happened to it as she saw another lady using one. "its worth $200!" too bad...its gone.

my FIL is the same... quite handy at times! there was a yamaha 250 race dirtbike leaning up against a tree with a blown engine. well I bet it stayed there for 20 years... he had to cut the tree down to get it out! now its in the barn here... I'll fix it one day! ;-)

i knew hoarders. we helped cleaned the barn. we found a john deere combine. no clue it was in there. and 14 year old diapers. USED. i will NEVER let my place EVER get anywhere even close to thinking about being like that. EVER. i throw a fit when the counter gets too full. thinking of which, it is now...seriously need to do something about it.

A friend spent two years cleaning her mom's house (found an excuse and moved her to an apartment): yard sale: 78 winter coats, 700 pairs of cheap shoes, 6 boxes of new dishes (matching set) my sister bought them (4 boys under age ten); books galore, dollar store stuff by the box full, etc. i filled a trailer many times (small uhaul type) with bags of clothes -new- with tags still on; and drove it to Salvation Army. The front door opened 6 inches max and we squeezed in sideways. Floor had 6 inches of stuff on it. Walking around a vacuum started up: no one could find it under the stuff- they did find the plug on the wall and unplugged it.
I filled the car twice w boxes of cereal and cans of corn for chicken feed (all other cans of "food" went into dumpster). Filled two dumpsters with unusuable stuff. Fyi a can of tomatoes (under the right conditions) implodes on itself. Then the house needed $100,000 to be suitable for sale. That it didn't burn down or city gov't didn't throw her out is a miracle.

Sounds like my place! Keeps all the old truck parts, half of cabs, etc. "All good deals" "may need it one day" then he turns around and takes my very few items to the dump! Lol
