Well another step closer to being prepared for when hens go broody. (Keeping my fingers crossed that I have at least 2)
Rick made this pen to go above nesting boxes. Which was wasted space anyway
He made it with a divider that if I need a bigger pen I just pull out the plywood in the centre
Can also be used for a hen if injured etc
Next thing is to get an automatic egg turner for my new incubator
Then I should be set!
Woohoo

That looks like a good arrangement. I have something quite similar. The one thing I have found is that a setting hen likes to be kind of in the shadows. I ended up taking a lager cardboard box and putting it in as a nest box. Taped it shut like a moving box, cut a chicken sized hole up form the bottom and filled the bottom with straw. Makes sort of a cave for them to nest in, and it seems they like it better than full light. Feels safe and secluded or something.

Two hens did two batches each that way last summer and several more singles. Too many chicks for me, and I sold some ready to lay pullets. Advertised on Kijiji, free range laying muts, easter eggers, ten dollars each. I think I sold about 30, groups of six or eight. Sent an older hen and a young roo free with each group too. I thought it worked well for all concerned.
