Re: Weasels

I let my chickens into their pens one morning maybe 2 months ago and immediately heard them reacting to something. There was a damned weasel standing on its back legs in my rear pen. It had what I think was a baby chipmunk in its mouth. I immediately got everyone back into the coop, locked them in for the day and went to work. On the way home I grabbed traps from my brother. I inspected that rear pen and found that the chipmunks had dug under the skirting and buried hardware cloth. The weasel came in through their tunnels. I closed up the gaps the best I could with what I had laying around but had to find hardware cloth to do the job properly. I set 2 traps baited with cat food but caught nothing and saw no evidence of more digging for the next few weeks. I got the hardware cloth finally and buried it under the entire floor of that pen. I was very lucky that Mr. Weasel was in the mood for rodent that day and not chicken. I'm glad you got them Ross and sorry you lost some.

So what you are saying @Happy is that the "helpful weasel" was just keeping the pesky chipmunks out ? ;)
It's good you heard the chickens complaint !!

Sorry about what happened @ross What is a roller? OMG 120! No typo? What killing machines they are. Such a deadly cunning animal. I saw one chasing a rabbit on our lawn about 10 years ago. Never seen one since. Hope I never do!

I know I was very lucky.
Has anyone tried the traps that electrocute rodents? I saw one at Peavy Mart last time I was there. It's like a small tunnel that they crawl in and ZAP! Well worth it to me if they work. I'm not into killing for no reason but if you mess with the Grumps it's all out war. 😡😡😡

Yes! I have the electrocution device and I've used it when a chipmunk has got into the coop. It does work!

I see a chipmunk go into our coop to eat the food regularly. I'm supposed to electrocute it? Is the concern "disease carrying rodent"?

Nope. I just don't like feeding chipmunks organic chicken feed. If you like feeding them, please feel free to :).

I had always been under the impression that chicken mites were species specific and only came from other birds. But I will tell you that every time I had chipmunks in my pen I had problems with mites on my chickens. Nobody needs that. Also if a chipmunk can get in then so can a weasel. And you really don't want that.
I don't try to kill every chipmunk or squirrel I see. But if I see evidence that they are trying to dig around the coop or setting up a home then they need to go. They're cute but they sure can be destructive.

Chipmunks are rats! I used to love our area Bobcat keeping the population down!
