RIP Oliver
RIP Oliver
For the last 8 years and 10 months of my life every single morning I would hear the flap of wings and count, 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and Oilver would crow 20x like clock work. I counted most days. For the last month or so, that crow has been silent.
I have been keeping chickens for 9 years. At my first chicken auction I was talked into Olive, a beautiful olive egger pullet. Who a few months later clearly became Oliver, my first rooster. I spent alot of time chasing a young teenage Rooster away from my poor bantam hens. Until we came to an understanding, they were His hens and I was just taking care of them.
In all the years I have had Oliver as my pet, he has never once attacked me. He was the supervisor on all of my coop projects. He had to inspect everything I did. He offered approvals and very little criticism.
He has been attacked by an owl and a couple of dogs. We have stood on our roof to see if we could find him after he was chased by the dogs.
I have watched him sweet talk a very scared hen into coming back into the hen house when I couldn't in the dark.
I have hand fed him peas and peanuts and made sure he had something to drink, as the cancer slowly progressed. I couldn't help my 9 yrs old friend fight this battle nor could I cure him.
I totally understand most people have no idea has these birds work their way into your heart. I will miss my friend Oliver.

So sorry for your loss, @Kbr42 .
How you have described him, and by looking at the photo you posted, shows that he was a beautiful boy in every way. Rest in peace, Oliver.

Such beautiful words to memorialize a beautiful soul. @Kbr42 I can feel your grief and I'm sorry. Thank-you for taking such great care of Oliver until the very end.
