Funk?...

Post by TomK » Mon Jan 27, 2020 7:55 am

Haha..got ya with the headline huh?...anyway, its a serious question I have..my better half swears that on occasion she catches a funky taste off an egg, be it scrambled, fried or boiled....my own taste buds are less sensitive so i don't catch it at all but who am I to disagree?...so i looked it up and came across a brief article in an old "Science" magazine...Tetrachloroanisol: A Source of Musty Taste in Eggs and Broilers....something to do with certain wood shavings used in bedding....has anyone else had this issue?...would love some feedback.....

Hmm, since I am one of those people who can smell and taste anything that's a bit off, (and it's not a good thing) I have never come across that in our eggs and we have used all kinds of different bedding over the years.
I must say the wood shavings have come in so many different forms that I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were punky.
I am assuming the birds don't eat the wood shavings or not on purpose anyway ?
I would always turn my eye to feed, before suspecting anything else.

OC..yeah...that's my inclination too but one just never knows...i only get one bag of feed at a time as i don't have a great deal.of storage space in the coops and typically use almost all of it up before replenishing so it's not bad or mouldy feed unless of course there is an issue with supply...

Does your feed contain flax? Only time I've had an issue is when I had to buy eggs from an organic farm that feeds flax to boost omega-3s. I can taste that stuff easily. Also I never allow them to get into garlic or onions.
@Ontario Chick I am "that person" too! I was always brought onto tasting panels for taints when I used to work in food science.

I have never had an egg with an off taste. There's some food for thought!

There you go @TomK you simply must stop storing your eggs beside your truffles ;)

I can tell if my chickens have been outside eating bugs and stuff vs inside eating only layer. But that's the robustness of the taste, not a bad taste by any means.
Yep, i would suggest moving your eggs away from your truffles. HA HA
if it's always the same hen's eggs maybe she's just a little different...but that would mean keeping all the eggs separate by hen, and well....have fun with that!!! I could think of several experiments to do to find out what it is, but again, PITA.
maybe some hot sauce will mask it....?

I have read that the water and feed can both affect the taste of eggs, and also they can pick up flavors from other things stored near them in the fridge.
