3 Seasons in Ont . Asparagus, strawberries & sweet corn .

Bit of rain this morning, the hosts look somewhat encouraged, cumulus clouds passing by, here is hoping :)
Heat absolutely unbearable in the garden, weeded one tow of carrots and gave up.
Plenty of green tomatoes, can't wait !!!!
Caught Mactawish leaning on the waterer with ice in it, I think he uses it for his personal air conditioner .
This seems to be the time of year when we revisit the idea of air conditioner for the house, with 26 days over 30C this year it's starting to get a bit unpleasant here, even with our mature grove we live in.

lots of thunder, lightning and rain here this morning and this evening. very happy for the rain. wish i'd remembered to empty my rain gauge after I accidentally watered it along with the plants around it yesterday. :-\

Our house is still not too bad but we sleep in the pop-up trailer in summer. DH is considering insulating the big turkey coop though, the birds are fine in winter but suffer horribly in this heat. I worry about my old girls and the poor broodies. Just hoping that Kathleen doesn't want her usual 2nd go round!

Hey folks...hit the "post reply" button but its not really a reply is it?...oh dear, how my mind works some days..lol..anyway, have had a busy busy, well, busy summer so far...trying to retire but its not working quite as i planned..I keep saying yes to projects..all good tho...have been hatching chicks all summer...mostly BCMs...started with a bought dozen from a woman near Maberly...not quite sure she waited long enough between roosters but I guess we will see...got 9 chicks...3 are cockerals...then i started collecting eggs for my friend Debbie down the road as she had a mink take out a lot of her BCM hens this spring...and I added a bunch of my own to the mix...also have this small flock of Brabanters and had them in with an EE rooster who was a mean bugger, noticed the term 'mean'?..saved a bunch of eggs and into the 'bator they went as well...it is really only 'experiment' in chicks as I am focussed on the BCM flock at the moment...pictures will follow as soon as I remember to take them..lol...and another batch of chicks is due this weekend...the BCM eggs are horrid to candle as these are really dark shelled so we will see...and then to top it off, last week my order of meat chicks showed up and they are doing really well...have them all together with the new chicks but will have them out in the chicken tractor as soon as the body feathers are all in. They seem to be doing well as I am only feeding morning midday and evening with water always available...Mid Oct appt for the freezer...had to totally fence the garden to avoid the deer menace here and went all raised beds...super busy spring to manage that but the only critter we havent stopped is the chipmunks...and once I got frame covers with hardware cloth built for the beds with the tempting treats all was pretty good...lost early plantings of chard and beets and carrots but got a handle on that finally...have 29 varieties of tomatoes on the go and the plants are insane..cukes are exploding at the moment as are pole beans and the various squash, melons and pumpkins have taken over the lower third of the garden...potatoes are ready to dig, the garlic is comg in this weekend, and to make things even more pressing timewise, the wild blackberries are a bumper crop this year...unbelievable...so what's new with you guys?...pics to come, promise

garlic harvested 2 weeks ago here....need to figure out where i'm going to put the next crop in. All our berries were crap because we didn't have any rain for 5 or 6 weeks. sigh. 2 strawberries. one tiny handful of blackberries. and about 5 raspberries. not enough water. we need rain again, the corn is tassled and trying so hard.....
My sweet corn should be ready later this weekend! yay! it's SOOOOOOO close that it's painful to check LOL

we are moving to 40% occupancy at work starting next week. travelling chaos. I am desperately trying to take a couple of weeks vacation sometime before i start teaching again in the fall. but doesn't look like it's going to happen. oh well. No travelling this year....but for staycations are just as good.

I have bumper crops of broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, pumpkins (yes, they're ready already - the smaller ones that have seeds without hulls on them). spaghetti squash, butternuts...the tomatoes scare me. I might have to trim the plants. i literally cannot walk through the garden now without stepping over, into, around or through some plant or another. The watermelons are almost ready, already had one, muskmelons are divine....

chickens are growing like mad. as are the ducks. so many ducks! actually have some nice barred blue muscovies! and i think DH visited Innisfil creek honey today, looking for bee supplies...glad it's the long weekend. of course have tons planned, and won't get much of it finished, but at least it's on my own time and what i want to do...lol.

Reminded me we had a group of friends down to dive long weekend 2014. I had a hatch starting and in the end everyody spent most of their time watching the incubator.
This lady - NJ, Nearly Junior, was part of that hatch. Dad was Lucky my wyandotte rooster and Mum was Nearly my black sex-link hen. Still truckin' along!

Another hot one here, tomatoes decidedly escaping their enclosure, no matter how fast I trim, they seem to replace and add more shoots, where are the deer when you need them.
Every time somebody mentions a long wknd I think oh yeah, but frankly between retirement and covid, every day is still Tuesday here

noticed that spell check keeps changing *covid* to *cover* , I guess its a bit of a synonym?

That Sunday morning feeling on a Saturday.....called procrastination to not getting my butt in gear and getting the hallway painted.....Ahhhhhhh a dog’s life.
