Marsha

Post by Kbr42 » Tue Dec 10, 2019 8:52 am

I'm flummoxed!
20181122_083103.jpg
This was Marsha, a 3 year old Light Sussex. Yesterday morning she was a little puffy and running around eating pasta. When I went to lock up the hens for the night, she had conjestion and one eye had bubbles. I brought her inside and gave her some more Denagard.
This morning she couldn't stand, had dischavrge coming from her mouth. Gave her a shot of antibiotics, by 7:15 she was dead.

She was one of my nicest hens, easy going, aways first in line for treats. I spent most of the time chasing her all over my property.

I consider myself a fairly attentive keeper. I spend time with my flock, just looking at them. Not sure how i missed how sick she was.

RIP Marsha

OK I don't want to scare you but this could be/become a big deal. The eye bubbles scare me. Several things it could be, none of them good. Is it possible to put her in the freezer and have Guelph do an autopsy? Not sure how current the following info is.
Veterinarian inquiries Andrew Brooks (Lab Head) asbrooks@uoguelph.ca 613-258-8320
Jan Shapiro jshapiro@uoguelph.ca 613-258-8320
Specimen Reception Inquiries Thomas McLean tmclean@kemptvillec.uoguelph.ca 613-258-8320
The other thing to consider is if you go that route you need to be prepared for any unpleasant answers you might get.
SOme of these things happen very fast indeed with birds sickening quickly. This time of year is bad because of migrating birds.
Meantime watch your birds closely.

Oh so sorry to hear this, poor girl. This is the time of year weather changes are hard on them.
Coming on so quick like that have to wonder, hope the rest of your birds are fine.
I had 2 die recently and I was in a panic worried something was going on but everyone else is fine and one was always way behind in growth, no surprise there but the other one just up and died , no idea why.

@kenya I know! I don't have so much as a sneeze from any of my otjer birds. I've been giving my birds Denagard and vitamins once a week(on separate days) since the migrating birds have been doing thier thimg.
My coops are cleaned daily..in fact a couple of times a day...lol

I guess it happens. Sorry about your birds.

Sorry to hear about Marsha. Sounds like she ran into a virulent strain of whatever it was and she had no immunity to it. With respiratory diseases sometimes things can go downhill very quickly, and there's just nothing that can be done. RIP Marsha. You were a lovely girl, and thanks to your human, had a good life.

Sorry to hear about Marsha; may she RIP.
Even with watching the birds (I also stand and watch often) we can miss something.

Sorry to hear. Chickens are masters at hiding sickness-but this sure sounds like something very virulent and fast. Hopefully none of the other birds come down with it.
