It depends very much on the type of bird. My "heating" is on a thermostat and in my highly insulated coops really just takes the edge off and helps to stop the waterers freezing in the cold. The pullets were out running around yesterday wondering what the fuss was! The turkeys don't get heat, just heated buckets and a windproof but well ventilated coop to hide in.

... and it also depends on how many birds occupy the coop and how big the housing is; i.e., larger flocks generate way more body heat than a half dozen do.

Reporting back on the 400w flat panel heater. It works great, I love it. Not that this winter has been bad but on the really cold nights it did its job.
