Eggless eggs

Yesterday Dr. Oz talked about "eggless eggs". Someone has invented a plant-based (soy, peas, and some other things) egg mix - comes in liquid or powder. It supposedly has the same nutrients as real eggs, but no cholesterol. I don't believe they would be identical. Four people did a taste test on the show and 3 claimed they couldn't tell that the dishes weren't made with real eggs. Bakeries and other food factories have been using "liquid" (artificial) eggs for years. I don't know how this is different.

And the slow creep of the artificial food begins.
The whole premise is based on , that eventually there will be nobody left who actually remembers taste of real food.
Hard to imagine what kind of damage is done by pretending we actually understand all the components that are in "real" food and that we can recreate it in petrie dish.
the future is here, and it's not pretty.

My friend is having dietary issues and to quote her "I'm not eating any more of that vegan egg

!" Nature of Things had a study that showed eggs don't raise cholesterol either even when people were eating 6 a day. The whole problem is more and more processed garbage. OC is right, nobody knows what real food tastes like. I had some real pork and took a piece of tourtiere in to work for a friend. He said that it was great and it tasted of pig, not the PSE stuff from the store (PSE technical food term for pale, sweaty, exudative. Sounds nice eh?)

I understand people wanting to make more nutritious food choices, even if sometimes those choices are misguided. I do NOT understand why anyone would swap real food for highly processed crap that I would not even feed animals. Boggles my mind. @Killerbunny is right, no amount of real eggs will budge your cholesterol (at least not mine, and trust me I eat a LOT of eggs) Artificial eggs? Even saying that gives me a bad taste in my mouth

I wonder how many square feet of whatever they put in eggless eggs it would take to "grow" me the equivalent of the over 2000 I eat in a year? A lot more real estate, time, money, burnt fossil fuels etc. etc. than a dozen hens take, I'd wager.

I think you can buy plastic fried eggs to go with a Suzy Homemaker set. And my guess is that the same three out of four would not notice the difference as they have lived on plastic food all their lives.

I just looked these up. Besides soy, the one brand I looked at, lists as ingredients two different kinds of cellulose, which for the record, is indigestible plant fibres, usually from cotton, hemp, flax and wood pulp... and is literally what cardboard is made of. And rayon. The second brand I looked at was made of psyllium husk

I will probably spend the rest of my day facepalming and hoping vegans don't walk the rest of us off a cliff with them.
