For the same reason unsuitable for rabbits and possibly any other critters.
Probably got thrown out because requirements for keeping lab animals have changed over the years.
Even rats like better housing ;)

I think they would be perfect as an infirmary, although it would need plywood flooring.

I might ask for the trays and latches and take them to the scrap yard for him.

Jaye - I disagree - the top three would be fantastic! looks like pullout droppings tray. my issue is cage may be too tall and startled quail may try and flush and whack their heads. (mine did that years ago)

@thejonesboy , don't dispose of them just yet ... I just thought of another good use for them: they would make pretty good quail breeding pens when working with different colour varieties.
