Ol' girls out do the young 'uns

Today, my BSL's (about 3 - 3 1/2 yrs) out laid the younger hens, 4 eggs to 2.... so far today. That means the 8 older hens out laid the younger 13.
And because it's getting warmer, and the sun is shining, I let the younger part of the flock out of the barn and into their section outside. They still have the option of going back into the barn at night. Boy there was a lot of "beaking off" from the black hens!

Ha! Ha! Mine were out for a bit today only about 2 hours then they huddled in the doorway getting some sun but out of the cold.

Yeah, they had some fun pecking in the dirt and mud.
I saw the roosters (Burt and Burt Jr.) challenging each other through the fence only once, not to say that was the only time.

I have not let any of the chickens out of the enclosure yet. I might later this week when it is warmer, and there might be more green grass showing through.

They look too young to be laying eggs! They must have good genes.
Back to the topic....

Today:
from 8 BSL's - 4 eggs... with the option of 2 coops and 5 nesting boxes.

from 9 RSL's + 4 youngest hens - 5 eggs.... that have the most shelter (barn with hen house) and have the option to go outside, and the option of 9 nesting boxes.

Hmmm.... maybe it's the water. The BSL's get fresh water first thing in a.m. and before last feed. The other group has a heated water fount, in the barn, that gets refreshed (as in pouring out the backwash) as required, and new water every 2 or 3 days, as required.
The other day, I unplugged the water fount, and the trough was frozen by morning. It's plugged in again until it's warm enough outside.
So, today, there they were, wading through the huge puddle outside in their pen, sipping water... looking like ducks, getting their feet washed, anyway.
