Dirty birds

Had to give my white silkie male a bath today, for some reason the poop collects around his bum. :barf: He wasn't too thrilled and I ended up with some scratches and a dirty shower. He did love the blow dryer though. I think I'll have to trim around his bum to see if that helps. Anyone else have this problem?

I haven't had that problem with the chickens yet this winter, but I had to trim a couple of ducks...we had a couple REALLY cold days, and the ducks all just sat around to keep their feet warm, and ended up with poo balls frozen to their feathers. Then we had a "warm" day and most of them melted off (or got washed off as they splashed about in the snow melt), but two of the ducks had solid dry chunks cemented on, that weren't going anywhere. First time I've ever frozen poo on the waterfowl, usually it's the fluffy bum Jersey Giants.

I had to trim some butt feathers off one of my hens this year. There was just too much cemented on stuff to pick/rub away, so I just trimmed back as far as was necessary, left some longish "stubble" to keep her rear end somewhat insulated. She's been fine since then.

My really fluffy silkie pullet had the same thing. I did cut off the poopcicle lol. I was concerned because she hadn’t fixed it herself after a few hours so I was worried it would just get worse. No problems since! You can’t see where I trimmed either, it was not a lot.

He is kind of funny now strutting around showing off to everyone and threatening the other male to move away. Before he was hanging around in the corner.
