0 in the house. They don't go outside, but their building is not heated or insulated. They are fairly used to cold, but still sit fluffed and quiet when the wind chill is -30 to -45 (it's been this 3 times so far). They have heated water dishes and roosts so they can get off the floor. My EO rooster froze a couple points on his comb. They are doing quite well. The pullets and a couple of the hens started laying in the last few weeks. Eggs freeze if I don't get out there at the right time.

Our chickens all stay in the coop. It was brutally cold here. The night time temp hovered between -40 to -44 here from last Thursday until Monday when it started to warm up. We don't have room to bring in our chickens and we figured or hoped they would keep each other warm. We sure felt sorry for the chickens and all weekend my husband kept saying 'oh the poor chickens'. It's suppose to get cold again for the weekend beginning Friday again. I just hope that we don't have to go through it being that cold again, but who knows, as it is still only January. A little ways to go until spring.

Yep, "oh, poor chickens" was a recurring refrain here too. Have you considered a flat panel heater for your coop? Insulated or not, they take the edge off. We recently moved our 200w cozy coop heater into our main coop in addition to the 400w flat panel heater already there when the temps were below our tolerance levels (-15 and below night time temps is when ours get turned on here). The cozy coop has legs so they can cozy up on either side if placed somewhere not against a wall or something.

Well they all survived, the temperature didn't go below -14C during the day, not brave enough to check it at night.
No obvious signs of frost bite, so far anyway.

It was -32 with a wind chill of -44 here at 7:00. It's supposed to get to a high of -13 this afternoon. Temperatures forecast for next week are quite cold again - polar vortex has arrived. The good news is the sun is out already, and the days are getting longer. :) I haven't been out to the chickens yet. I will make them a warm treat.

Snookie What's the temperature like inside the coop? I don't think my silkies could survive those temps but maybe they could.

My husband has a couple heat lamps in the coop and it is insulated. We have just been put under an 'Extreme Cold Warning' once again. Tonight it is going down to -27, Friday -29 Saturday -35, Sunday -34. These temps do not include the windchill and will continue through the week by the looks of things. Back into the deep freeze. Today's high was -15 and right now it is -17 feeling like -28. Brrrrrrr....

I'll check for you today. Outside is sunny, -30 with a -44 wind chill. I gave them some cooked macaroni at 9:30. Everyone was doing good then.
