Good morning,
Bright and sunny here, the hens are slowly coming back in to lay, sure took their sweet time this year.
My home made heated waterers still working, pretty pleased with that.
Had to separate "Jewel" from the girls, with the long wattles he can't have a heated water bowl would dip and freeze.
Just as well, he was making himself busy, one of the pullets was just starting to show broken feathers on her back, no time to be bareback now :)
Have a safe one!

Well interestingly a "not a Bobcat" is being rehabilitated in a local wildlife facility. It was hit by a car in Lansdowne at the weekend. As far as I am concerned it can come here for an All You Can Eat Buffet of mice and chipmunks!

Nice enough to sit out under the hoop house and have coffee with the turkeys. Come breeding time I think I'll have to take myself out of the pen, HD is paying me FAR too much attention even when there are lovely girls around!

Wow, a month and a half to go before most people start the hatching eggs season. I'm going to have to figure out what kind of eggs to hatch, my hens' or purchased ones of another breed. Choices, choices....

We had one here for several years and never had a problem, also had a young one here. Since we shut our birds in at night that was OK. We only saw it at dusk & dawn. We never had a mouse or chipmunk problem and it lived in the neighbours Megadome where there was good eats!

BRRR! i think winter finally arrived! turkeys are still laying like mad. so i think i'm going to take the plunge and collect for the next 10 days and set. they'll hatch late february....and then i can get to work in the empty grow out coop and build something a little bit insulated with a heat lamp or plates and get them moved in march. argh! animals in the house again.....was trying to avoid it, but i'm seriously worried that there won't be any eggs left come springtime!
had a nice phone call the other day. an older gentleman had purchased a breeding pair of royals from me and he was just calling to ask if he could get some hatching eggs because his girl is laying and he cannot fire up the incubator for 2 eggs LOL. they're doing great he said, and settled right in and follow him all over the place.
So i guess i'll collect after getting him some eggs from this week, and then see what happens. i cracked open a couple and they seem fertilized.....but now that it's cold i hope they didn't get too cold before collecting!
