Didn't the natives use pine needles for tea?

I have aromatic cedar planks that a 100 years ago I was going to use to line a closet. Needless to say, I never did and they have been in my basement for at least 11 years. Any thoughts on whether or not I could use the to line my nesting boxes and the put wood shavings on top?
