New chicks

Post by Shnookie » Mon Aug 13, 2018 9:06 pm

Well, I spent the day driving to Saskatoon and back. It was cool and cloudy the whole way. How nice! The high today was 17 and there was a light wind. I picked up 16 new Ameraucana chicks - blue and splash. She threw in a free Serama rooster. I don't know what I'll do with him. His crow sounds like he's choking. I believe there are several roosters in the group, so I will have a selection. I wanted a new rooster that was unrelated to my hens. Several don't have much muff, but I like their eyes, heads, and bodies more than the ones I got from BC last year. She said she had 3 roosters with 12 hens that lay blue eggs. I'll see how they turn out. They had already been free ranging. They are a bit afraid of me, but are curious.

Awesome! I vote house rooster for the bantam guy, too. SeramaXameraucana chicks might be a hard sell ;)

I thought about the house rooster thing (I have a couple of empty bird cages), but I don't like the sound of his voice. I don't know how old he is. In her Ameraucana ad she was going to include a pretty speckled serama rooster and a white leghorn pullet chick for free. I have seen them put into other ads for sale so I wasn't expecting any to come with the chicks.

Congrats Shnookie! How old are they? I guess 5-7 weeks.

The serama rooster is about 4 months. The 12 smaller Ameraucanas were hatched June 26, and the 4 bigger ones were hatched about June 4.

So what do you do with a single Serama rooster? He's not going to be able to live with any of my standard chickens for the winter. The building isn't warm enough for him to live in a pen by himself. If he came in the house he would have to be in a cage downstairs. Do they make good pets? Maybe I can sell him as a pet. I haven't picked him up to see how tame he is. The lady he came from has several kids that might have handled them. She has some other pretty ones for sale. Just for show and tell I copied her picture to show you the colors. They look like ornaments. I can see how people could start collecting the different colors.

I'm pretty sure I know a couple of people that may have a pullet or 2 to keep him warm in the winter.
