For coon control, I have also heard that if you get a picture of Davy Crocket and put it up where they can see it, I helps keep them away.

Coons are good eating , lots of meat just do a good job of skinning out the fat & wrap in bacon or deep fry in turkey fryer . Luck

The ones I got stank to high heaven, I didn't even want to touch them. Is that normal?

Probably the den/ home they slept in unless sick . Once you get the fur coat off or colder weather comes .

I would expect that coon like anything else, a great deal of the taste etc depends on how it was killed and taken care of and how soon as well as what it was eating and its body condition and age. I know that is very important with most animals you contemplate eating. And Ross is right, cooler weather helps in almost every way.

I've never had one reek really badly, unless it was mucking about in a swamp. They do tend to smell like old urine though, I don't think they leave their dens to pee like most other mammals.

I have seen those around from time to time but didn't know what they were. When I try to ask wildlife service people, they would keep saying we only have green garter snakes around here and nothing else.
