A pretador in the henhouse
Went to get eggs and found this fella. Took and put him over the lake bank. Fox snake, endangered species but doing well around here. Every summer I have something happen with them. Today just egg, no chicks or setting hen which has happened before. Constricted the hen and killed her a couple years ago. I think she tried to defend her nest. I have found shed skins in the barn too. But if its a few eggs a year, so be it. Havent had to go to war yet, and I don't want to.

Wow. Bless you for caring for endangered snakes. I agree that an egg or two is a small price for helping such a beautiful creature survive.

Great!
I'm also with Al and the others on that one! Glad to see that you keep your cool around snakes and even big ones!
Too many people would just grab the shovel and start hitting.

Lovely creature. I would rather have a dozen snakes in my henhouse (actually that happened once--a female garter and her many suitors were, um, twining on some straw) than a single raccoon.
Good on you for moving her!
