DNA "matching" Confusion...and what's up with "X"?
My Ancestry DNA results arrived and they have made me a "Basket case"
I read, don't understand, so Google, read some more and STILL don't understand!
Ancestry gave me a list of 1,000 "Matches" to my DNA
Some are promising and I also downloaded my DNA to "GEDmatch"
GED has given me Hundreds of matches
I NEED help to understand the following
No matter how many articles I read, I can't grasp what is an "X"
(what it is good for, or IF it can be any help in my search)
Is there any way to figure out which is the "Mitochondrial" in my DNA results.
(GEDmatch lets you search your matches using Auto, or X so where would I find Mit)
GEDmatch says to be a good match you will need 700SNP and 7cM
But I don't know where to find the SNP in my DNA results
I have a Male match which is 1411cMs across 57 segments
Ancestry says the match "could" be aunt, uncle, grandparent or Half-sibling!!!
ANYONE know about this stuff........ANYONE......... "WLLady" ?????? ha ha ha ha

Without actually seeing the report i am of really limited help because it all depends on the site and the company that did the testing.

I haven't got a clue. I've just uploaded my raw DNA file to GEDMatch, I'll report back soon.

I hope these can help....
This one is the autosomal chromosomes-everything except x and y. The snps that you get identified happen in your genetic past and get passed from generation to generation from either parent to kid....so you can have 2 copies of a gene with different snps inside it. These snps are how they track your lineage. Some snps are more prevalent in some populations or areas of the world.
In this one the mitochondrial dna lineage is outlined in black on the right side...it follows moms moms moms moms line. Y dna for guys follows dads dads dads dads line (blue). The x and ys are in different colours beside the stick figures to show how they can segregate....girls get an x from each of mom and dad where boys get y only from dad and x only from mom.
