Re: Mid- life crisis
baronrenfrew ~ had my crisis on my 25th BD! Decided to never let that bother me again...hopefully LOL
In the last 18 years, there's been MANY jaw surgeries, & MANY MANY deaths
Retirement lasted 2 yrs, hubby was bored so went to work for a Tree Co.
He left after 5 yrs & 9 years ago started his own biz...meaning "I" was working
Last yr after alot of injuries (rotary cuff, 2 hernias & countless other crap) I quit the Tree biz
A month later my dad was hospitalized & I had the Free time to drive 2 hours to visit him.
He passed away after 5 months but he complained to me a number of times
Said he "wasted" the last 10 years of his life. He didn't do the things he wanted.
He stayed in an unhappy marriage because it was easier.
He didn't travel, meet with friends or anything because it seemed too much trouble.
Dad's parting words of wisdom ~ "Don't waste Your life like I did"
--------------------
Next year I turn 65 & I am planning out my MISSION "NOW"
IF Possible, Sell the house & cash in on the crazy real estate market
Secure our retirement $ since we don't have a pension
DRAG hubby (kicking & screaming) to start Enjoying life
IF he doesn't want to, then get outta my way & don't hold me back
Let's SMELL the ROSES, Have some FUN, visit friends, & travel!
Let's do the we always talked about, but never did before it's too late
SOOOO am I having a MID-LIFE crisis
Or am I having a much needed MID-LIFE epiphany
I'm not sure, but I'm damn excited to start the journey!

Re: Mid- life crisis
Aye Poultry Princess! Enjoy life! Make a list of what you enjoy and do more of that (and less of what you don't)!
I enjoy time in the woods (and I won't make it a business, then I won't enjoy it!) the outdoors, fresh air, improving the forest, power tools, its all fun (in the right quantity)
Polish family around the corner: old lad was a woodsman (lived through wars and more) and spent his old age with an axe, a saw, and a wheelbarrow (the forest was beautiful) and he was 97 when he died (brought in a half chord that week). I am sure it kept him healthy and alive to keep doing just at a slower pace. (His wife had to button his shirt as he couldn't manipulate the buttons anymore.)

Re: Mid- life crisis
Poultry Princess, no disrespect but at 65 I think you're passed the midlife crisis stage. I do think you have come up with a life plan and it sounds sensible to me. I will back you up on this. Look at my parents, worked hard all their lives, kept putting off traveling etc until they reached a point in their lives where traveling would be difficult instead of enjoyable, then my dad suddenly got cancer and died, while mom has Alzheimer's and couldn't tell you what day it is. I have made a promise that when I sell this farm, I want to see some of Canada, I want to go out west, both my parents always said they wanted to take a trip out west but kept putting it off until it was too late.

WHAT!?!?!
I'm PAST mid-life CRISIS age!!!!!
Are you SURE - LOL
When I spoke to hubby about my new direction,
He asked IF I wwas going thru Mid-Life crisis!
Then he said (I'm NOT joking) that "maybe" we could plan to do stuff ...NEXT SUMMER!!!!
If I didn't like him so much< I would have punched him in the face
Oh I'm so sorry to hear about your parents, that is Exactly what worries me!!!
How sad that they left it so long that they couldn't make their dreams come true.
My DH uncle had millons & in his 50's had a heart attack.
He & his wife ( with no kids) decided to sell the biz & travel, but Never followed thru.
They passed away a few years later & the vultures enjoyed & squandered all their millions.
Quite an eye opener as to what can happen if you Wait for good to happen.

I want to have a big garden, raise critters, quilt ~ ONLY FOR FUN!
Don't want to analyze everything so I can squeeze another buck from it
NOT that there's anything wrong with that!!!!
Been self employed for 35 years & "I'm DONE"
The Polish family sounds divine....97 & able to physically do things is the Ultimate
My hubby goes out for Hours to split, chop, stack wood....he luvs it
Now if I can get him to Italy for a VaCa, well that would be awesome - LOL

Re: Mid- life crisis
:-&, you have to be a little more devious!
Go for a harvest festival, or arrange forest tours, a wood conference, something where he gets to be a woodsman IN ITALY!
That way the trip is a BUSINESS EXPENSE he can deduct on his "T2125" self employed taxes.
Keep in mind that you are making a sale: selling the idea of going to Italy. Start with the passport application. Start making Italian food. Watch movies about Italy (or close): my favorite is the The Good Year w Russel Crowe (about inheriting a vineyard in Provence- South of France)

Re: Mid- life crisis
I think you haver a few points that may help me...a few not so much.
"Woodsman" stuff in Italy could interest him.
Got our 1st passpost a few months ago, so all set to go.
Definetly going to check out ther Russel C movie.
Never saw it & would be a great introduction
BTW - "I" am ITALIAN - ha ha ha
Pasta every Sun, Mon, & for me every Tues.
Pasta under every ladel of chicken soup.
Lucky for me, hubby grew up 2 streets away from me....he was one of the few NON-Italians in the neighbourhood
His Bestie is Italian & he luvs anything Italian, especially wine.
He just Hates travel...he hates anything that takes him away from "home'
I actually think it would be better for me to go ALONE!
Don't want to have to explain all the wailing & crying my DH is doing in Italy
hee hee hee hee hee

Ha! Ha! Poor hubby but you are probably right go with a friend or another family member. That way you have someone to look after the animals when you're gone.

Re: Mid- life crisis
In the spirit of "seizing the day" I've been crawling vacation websites the past 2 days. You only turn 50 once. I'm determined to be snorkeling in warm, blue water that day. Anybody been to Cozumel, Mexico or Roatan, Honduras? It's a toss up.
@Poultryprincess has your hubby travelled at all before? Because I must admit that I'm a big home body and there's no place I'd rather be than surrounded by the things I know and love BUT....once I get where I'm going I LOVE to travel. I'm always happy and comforted to get back home at the end of a vacation but there's an explorer in me that I can't deny. Maybe you could try baby steps with hubby (Italy is kind of a big trip) first and let him discover his own inner explorer rather than dragging him lol.
