Big surprise this am when I went to get a little garlic for eating. It's almost dry in the ground, I expected it to be awful and the bulbs are fat and beautiful! These are the ones I got from Bart at Bulbs of Fire a couple of years ago. OC had some of these too. I suppose it pays to buy good stock.

Haha! I too harvested my garlic this morning. Someone said to wait until there were four dead leaves. It was hard to tell, but the one scape I had left was pointing straight up so I dug it and it was perfect :).

Well Duchess finally figured out what to do with a fox.

She ran him off a few times this week, but the fox kept coming back. I saw the chickens run by and ran out and he was on the drive way..front leg mangled and back legs not working..finished him with an axe.

Surely somebody somewhere has done a study of all the different sounds that chickens make. Right? Where would I find it? I don't even have a vocabulary for most of it. There is crowing (cockadoodledoo or cocorico or kikiriki, depending where you're from) and clucking (bock bock bock) but what do you call all the other sounds? My babies sounded like songbirds, for about 3 months, and there are words for it, twitter and whistle and trill and chirr, but now they're making new sounds. Screeching like peacocks today when I sprayed them with water. Squawking, ok that's a thing. But what about the jubilation sound when they've just laid an egg. I'd call that crowing, but the word's taken. And there's a sort of cooing sound, and that soft happy muttering.

Egg song is the announcement they make after laying. And when another hen joins in I call it cheerleading.
I call the cooing sound purring and it's one of my favorite sounds in the world. Sounds like pure contentment to me.
If you pay attention you'll get to know all of those noises and even which chicken is making them. I can tell each of my girl's egg songs from my house. I can also tell the difference in my roosters warning calls. He makes a slightly different noise depending on if he sees a threat on ground or in the air.
I have no idea what this book is like but I've seen it advertised on FB a fair bit lately

Thank you both for these references! I will see if the book is on kindle. I'm looking for youtubes, will post if I find any.

Fun watching the ducks in the rain this morning! Like Snoopy's Happy Dance. I was trying find find out how much rain we got, and the running total for July 2018 so far was zero point zero as of July 21. I hope it rains some more later.
