Any ideas on what to do with an old fuel tank? We used to store the diesel in it for the tractors, it's about 60 years old so I don't use it anymore. The company we get fuel from said they don't handle them, nobody seems to know what to do with it, I would like to get rid of it.

Cut in half they make great burning barrels . Take filler plug out for water drainage

i second the burn barrel idea. likely to dispose of it you would need to burn it anyways to get rid of any fuel residue on the inside. Just do NOT cut it open with a torch unless you know it has been fully drained and cleaned!!!!!

Aye, Kathy has it there. Set a fire inside before you cut or do much of anything. Couple kids killed in a school a couple of years ago cutting a barrell apart: it had been used for peppermint oil. Barrell blew up.

I also vote for the burn barrel idea. I also know people who have turned them into smokers and barbecues.
They also can be turned into goat and pig huts, dog houses, forts for kids etc.
Scrap yards around here will charge to take them away if it is still functional fuel tank, but cut it in half and you get money for it. If you're going to go through the trouble of cutting it you might as well get some use out of it.

Or if you don't want to keep it for repurposing, I see Kijiji ads regularly offering old fuel tanks for free. They usually don't stay up long.

if you want to cut it, run a hose from your exhaust pipe into it for 15 min or so to fill it with CO2, then you should be able to cut into it ok. Have the hole you are filling into near the top. CO2 is heavier than air so will displace from the bottom up.

It's pretty big, I would like it to disappear. Most places don't want it because of it having fuel inside. I will ask around. Don't worry, I will not cut it open, when I was in high school, two old lads cut into a tank with a torch. I still remember the blast today. Lucky the men were not hurt. When they were asked what were they thinking, they said "what?"

Cut it in half and you have two really good fire pits. Saws-all works well with a bi-metal blade. Diesel is not like gas and will not burn with a spark.
