Re: Okay...seriously???
I got one egg. Yesterday. From my bantam Silkie. She has been laying one every other day, so far. She's eight years old.
Thankfully my two quail hens lay pretty much every day, so I get the equivalent of one chicken egg every two days from them..

So, Jaye, that means an omelette once every two weeks, right?....

Re: Okay...seriously???
I’m feeding 20 chickens right now.
6 are roosters or cockerels.
3 are pullets not yet laying.
9 are old grouchy hens that take every second of their break that they are entitled to in their collective agreement.
1 is an over-achiever Barred Rock that simply must out-do the rest and lays 4-5 eggs a week still
1 is a new employee (Bebe) who just started working a few months ago so has not acquired any seniority yet to get days off. She’s laying 5-6 a week.

Re: Okay...seriously???
I think that's just normal, when I had hens just in a hen house, they would quit after moulting and start again in February. In the barn it's a little different, it's not warm but the temperature is more stable and water usually doesn't freeze until Christmas time. Some of the hens would start back but only every second or third day without lights, also depending on the breed.
As for now one mother bantam is sick but the other one is still laying almost every day, she is just over one year so she didn't molten. The chicks are turning five months and are starting to lay without any lighting. Roosters have been shown to reduce egg numbers but it is more likely because we're in some of the shortest days of the year.

I go in and wave the hatchet around like a madman. I also put up this poster.
Helps for a few days, then they start lollygagging about again.
