ok off topic from chickens but I'm wanting to get a new car ( used really ) I want all wheel drive because of all the late night horrible roads I have to drive in the winter. Looking at a used subaru or a used Rav 4.Anyone have any thoughts?

I'd go for the RAV4 myself, Subaru parts generally cost more than Toyota. Lots of people like to make mudders out of RAVs, and sell the OE parts for cheap.

Interestingly, I am looking at those two for next year, I have driven Subaru Forester, two older models and really liked them, but the dealer here is far, and that would definitely be inconvenient.
I haven't driven the RAV4, but repairs for my 4runner are freakishly expensive, not sure the RAV4 would be any better and I haven't driven it yet.
Curious of other people's experiences.

I've driven a subaru 2010 with all the options and loved it. I haven't driven the rav4 yet but my husband heard from his mechanic friend that they require a lot of maintenance just wondering if anyone else heard that or experienced that.

Yes it was the subaru my husband said was expensive on repairs.
Ah WWW my husband tried to show me how to change my oil and tires. I just refused, in my mind I do all the house chores plus most of the outside looking after gardens , lawns and he never does anything with the chickens or horses. The vehicles are his to look after I just refuse to do it. Yes I could do some basic things but I refuse thats his job.

I totally trust anything your DH says, but after driving a Toyotas for the past 16 years, I find it hard to believe anything is more expensive to maintain, and boy, if the Subaru is more expensive then that, that's a real bummer.
Now I am back to vacillating again.

There were times in our lives when DH did lots of maintenance on our vehicles, one of the more memorable ones, when he changed tires, didn't tighten the bolts and I lost a wheel on the highway, pretty disconcerting when you spy something in the corner of your eye passing you and it turns out to be your wheel.
So the two main "rules of Retirements"
# 1 no shopping for groceries together
# 2 no amateur car maintenance

Haha we do # 1 together but separate OC . I have my list ( she makes ) & Donna has hers . I add the odd thing to it . We go our separate ways me on my electric WalMArt cart & her walking . If I have to make a decision I phone her or meet before checkout & compare . Works for us & I feel useful not disabled . Lol luck
Also I get to look at fishing supplies on my own without interference .
