Well we knew it was coming from the 6 whiny little chicks outside the coops looking confused. AT 7 1/2 weeks Mum's gone off with the handsome rooster. Babies trotted off to their coop OK too. She's been an outstanding broody sitting through the hot spell and being a very attentive Mum. Always a bit sad though when they break the ties.

Nature call, time to start laying again :)
My Ameraucana broody still has her one Solo chick with her at 8 weeks but started to lay few days ago.

I always feel bad for the ones that are just suddenly cut off, even though I know they'll forget mum and move on quickly. Your Little Mama--if there's one thing I love about her, it's that she tends to cut the apron strings more gradually, over a week or so...first, she decides to roost and calls the littles up to her. Then, she stops calling, but still let's them cuddle for a couple nights. Then she stops talking to them altogether, and they just move away. She never drives them off, or leaves them lost in the dirt, they just painlessly go from babies to flock members. This past brooy cycle has been a departure for her...she co-sat with another hen, which she's never done before (generally being beneath Her Majesty's notice) just plopped herself down atop Frankies' eggs, and about 2 weeks after babies hatched, LM abruptly handed the reins over to Frankie, and trotted off with her next date!
Andy, who hatched eggs I gave her at the same time Frankie went down, is still toting around 'her' chicks.

SHe rushed over to check on the kids this am, saw all was OK and left with the rooster.
