Just sharing...
Hiya folks...just thought i'd share...in 2003 I lucked into two black walnut logs in Peterborough...getting them home is a tale onto itself...let it suffice that i got them here and to a mill...the boards have been air drying ever since...coupla weeks ago i was wondering what to get my oldest daughter for her 34th (yeah) birthday...drew a brain blank, as old farts are wont to do, and then thought, hey I'll give it a go at making her a cutting board outta some of that walnut....i really had no idea what it would turn out like...you be the judge......I'm' kinda tickled, as was she...

Planted some black walnuts about 20 years ago, Thanks for letting me see what the wood looks like, what a beauty, will save the picture as it's not very likely I will ever see the wood out of our trees.

Re: Just sharing...
thats beautiful man right on! what did you seal it with? I made one for Lizzie for xmas, about 3x3'. I found an old wood top from a dish washer in the barn... you know where its made from smaller pieces pressed and glued together... it was still solid, not rotted at all and a giant mess. after about 6 hours sanding it with a palm sander you wouldnt recognize it as the same piece of wood. then I wondered how the heck to I seal this up so its food safe and sanitary ect... Coconut oil. coconut oil is alot like butter, i scooped a lot out, grabbed the hair dryer and a microfiber rag and started working it into the wood it turned out just beautiful! ill post a pic soon... none on my phone.
Right on man! I wish I had a stockpile of walnut!

Al.. I'm a bit of a lumber / exotic woods scavenger and I've got all kinds of stuff here and inherited a bunch from my late father in law as well... I've got cherry and maple and oak... Some birch that I sawed back in the seventies...red cedar...black oak plank that I bought in 1972 to make spindles for a spinning wheel...I used to own a sawmill back in the day...52" blade goon a refurbished McRae portable? mill...incredible unit...wild what they thought ofcas portable in the early part of the 20th century... Anyway...lots of material..should keep me going for a while... The trick is seasoned lumber..none of this kiln dry crap...it'll split sure as anything...then your project and good feelings go down the toilet... Anyway...I'm going to see if there's an interest in specialty boards and custom stuff...keep me at home more where I want to be anyway.... Cheers..
and thank you to all the nice comments from everyone
