Seriously the mosquitos are worse at my house than they were in spring. And with more rain in the forecast I doubt that's changing anytime soon. Relatives that live in the bush in Muskoka were her this past weekend and ran screaming from their car to the front door lol. I hate using repellant but I have no choice if I want to be outside at any time of day or evening. I'm feeling especially bad for the chickens. They have window screens stapled over the hardware cloth but the chicken door is open all day and with 2 broodies sitting I try to get as much air movement as possible so I leave the man door open. The place is filled by lock up time daily. I tried closing up earlier yesterday...made no difference. I've got stickies up everywhere the chickens can't reach them...any other suggestions?

Oh boy, we live on the edge of forest and the mosquitoes are absolutely brutal the only way I can weed the garden is wearing a net hat even then they bite right thru if it touches my face anywhere.
The only tried and true that doesn't harm anybody else is still a fly paper not as effective for mosquitoes as it is for flies but at this point anything helps.

Didn't some people have some success with a garlic spray product last year? Or was it the year before? You applied it to your yard and after a couple of hours the smell supposedly dissipated and it was effective for about a month, unless it rained a lot. I know they sold it at the feed store in Kemptville at the time. I'll try to find out what the name of it was.

@Ontario Chick same here. Bush/ravine/river behind me...an old hay field beside me that's now uncut and tall grass/ravine on other side. I can trim my lawn and clear standing water all I want but I'm surrounded by breeding grounds! I may try rubbing some garlic on the coop walls while I'm waiting on the spray!

I use the Mosquito Barrier garlic spray and it seems to help especially if sprayed around the outside of coops and poultry runs.

Install swallow & bat houses . Natures way .
Perma -cell pocket machine works great in small areas where your working . 24/7 free range chickens work well too & keep grass cut short around house , pens etc . Luck

I didn't realize that it would be a problem for the chickens as I figured that they would EAT them, but I have noticed that my coop is quite buggy! Oh dear. Something else to worry about!

One of these days I'll remember to get one of those repellant jobs that Ross recommends. I've heard that they actually work and no bug spray needed :)

I have bat houses and bats GALORE! And snakes galore (hubby keeps trying to convince me they are good because they eat mosquitos - ya right)
And there isn't one long blade of grass that I have control over. The chickens do free range every day. I hate to think what they'd be like without that! I haven't heard of the perma-cell will look into it. Thanks
