RIP little weasel

Post by Shnookie » Wed May 31, 2017 9:44 pm

I was sad to see that my cat killed the weasel last night. It was a female so likely had babies. I found her in the chicken building near the bins where I store the feed. There was also a half-eaten young gopher nearby. I don't know if the weasel was eating it when the cat caught her or the cat ate it later. I have tons of rodents (voles, mice, ground squirrels, and now baby and adult gophers) here so I was hoping the weasel would keep me from having to use poison. I cleaned out a bird house that was hung on a pole about 6 feet above ground the other day. It had a mother mouse with 6 babies in it.

I have seen the weasel around the yard often during the day. She had never done anything to my chickens (except maybe scare them if they saw her). I thought she was cute.

They are cute, but deadly predators. Lucky it didn't get any of your chickens!

Our old Friend Tony had "tamed" one.

When it was hungry it would drag bones around in his ceiling (old log house). He'd knock on the wall and it would come out a mouse hole. He'd feed it burger from his hand.

I found 2 dead baby weasels in the garden last week. They were about 4 inches long. I also saw a new adult weasel. I hope this one leaves my chickens alone. There are tons of rodents for it to eat.
