Homemade chicken treats

Post by Brebis » Sun Nov 27, 2016 1:43 pm

A while ago someone posted a recipe for chicken treats, much like a cake. Not sure if it was on the old site as I can't seem to see it here on PTO.
My sister was cleaning out my Mums pantry and found all sorts of old ingredients that might just make nice treats for the chickens and I just didn't wat to throw them all out, plus I have a bunch of stuff like suet that could be added....
Anyone have a recipe?

I do, but need to dig for it, which I will need to do anyway, because I'll be making some this winter again. Will post as soon as I find it.

Here you go ...

2 Cups scratch grains (a commercial or homemade mix of cracked corn, oats, barley & other mixed grains)
1 Cup layer feed
1 Cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 Cup sunflower seeds (I happened to have unshelled sunflower seed/safflower seed mix so I used that)
1/4 Cup wheat germ
1/4 Cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (aids in respiratory health)
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (helps circulation to prevent frostbite and warms the body)
3 eggs
1/2 Cup Blackstrap molasses
1/2 Cup coconut oil, liquified

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In large mixing bowl, mix the dry ingredients. Add the wet ingredients and mix well. Pat into several small baking dishes or casseroles, so your blocks are approximately 2" thick.(Optional, use a chopstick make a hole in each block so you can hang them in the run.)

Bake for 30 minutes, then cool completely. Run a knife around the inside rim of each pan and invert to remove the block and serve.

Leftovers can be refrigerated or wrapped in foil and frozen and then defrosted as needed.

I posted this one a while ago. Looks very similar to Jaye's
I threw a bunch of different things in each time I made it...whatever I had on hand or needed used up.

Yeah, what Happy said, :-). I think I only strictly followed my recipe once - maybe twice. The rest of the time I threw in whatever I had available for grains and flour. Cinnamon, Cayenne pepper, BOSS, oil and molasses I always add, though.

Well my lab ate the first one in about 30 seconds lol.
I broke it up a bit and gave 2 pieces at a time because the 12 of them were downing it. Then the one I made in a bundt pan got hung up on a rope in run and lasted a lot longer...few days before they broke it and then devoured off the ground.

Hi Jaye,
Are those treats suitable for chickens with trimmed beaks?
