Does anyone know of any breeders of the Scots Dumpy in Ontario?

Ideal Poultry is the only hatchery in the USA that has them and they are concerned with lack of genetics.

Now if I could only fly to Scotland, and pick up a few, and had some money to buy some from the U.S. .... Oh well no money, means no buying power...

Anybody know the lucky loto numbers for this weekend?

Is there a particular reason why that breed? There's a small hatchery in B.C. that has Light Sussex production lines and other birds worth checking out and I plan to order from them. Starting a new thread....

The reason I took an interest in this heritage breed was because: 1. I was born in Scotland, and 2. It seems to be a dying breed. There is a 25% instant mortality gene. A 25% chance that they will have long legs, instead of short. Which means that only 50% are viable. Add in that there is an active club trying to preserve the breed in Scotland, and that they are a heritage dual purpose breed. In short (no pun intended) they are unique, which is what I like about them. I tend to go for the underdog/not so pretty things in life. Pretty is nice, but sometimes high maintenance, if you know what I mean...

pipes, why don't you contact the club in scotland, and see if you and then could arrange something? If they know someone else is interested they may know who else in the world has them, or even have some ideas of how to get them here.....? just a thought.

I second Kathys suggestion. if you follow the proper procedures anything can be imported, it could get a little expensive BUT we cant really put a price on rare poultry. you would think the Rhode Island Red is a common bird but the real standard bred heritage variety sure is here in Canada. I've invested quite a bit in my flock and believe it to be worth every penny!

The only source I can find for this breed is http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/cat ... ckens.html. But they no longer ship to Canada. So you would have to contract someone on the USA side to raise some birds and import them as adults.
